Excitation and Evolution of the Quasi 2-Day Wave Observed in UARS/MLS Temperature Measurements

چکیده
The quasi 2-day wave is known as a strong dynamic perturbation occurring usually after solstice in the middle and upper atmosphere. The excitation mechanism of this transient wave is discussed for years but no clear answe] has been altained. In this paper, propagating characteristics of the 2-day wave are studied based on 8-month temperature measurements from the Microwave Limb Sounde~ (MLS) on the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS). The studies are focused on the wave events that happened in January 1993 and in July/August 1993. The data suggest that winter planetary waves could be responsible for triggering the summer 2-day wave through long penetration into the summer stratosphere. A connection is evident in the evolution of the wave amplitude between the summer 2-day wave generation and winter wave penetration. The data also suggest that the enhancement of the wave amplitude is a result mixed with a local unstable wave and a global normtil-mode Rossby wave.

Properties of the quasi 16 day wave derived from EOS MLS observations
[1] This paper describes the use of EOS Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) data to observe the field of traveling planetary waves with quasi 16 day periods. This study utilizes MLS v2.2 temperature and geopotential data between 1 January 2005 and 31 December 2008 in the range 316 hPa to 0.001 hPa (approximately 8 to 97 km) to examine these waves. Analysis demonstrates that the quasi 16 day wavefield ...

[1] We report on simultaneous measurements of the westward propagating quasi 5-day wave in the occurrence rate of noctilucent clouds (NLCs) and the temperature field at NLC altitude during the 2005 NLC season in the northern hemisphere. NLCs are detected using SCIAMACHY/ Envisat limb scattering measurements, and the temperature profiles are measured with MLS/Aura. Quasi 5-day wave signatures ar...
متن کاملDiurnal variations of temperature and winds inferred from TIMED and UARS measurements
Owing to their sampling properties in local solar time, both the TIMED and UARS spacecrafts provide the opportunity to quantitatively study the mesospheric thermal tides. The information though is limited because it takes the TIMED instruments 2 months to cover the full range of 24 hours, almost twice as long as UARS. We present here the results of an analysis, in which the seasonal and global-...

A method for assimilating observations of ozone was implemented in the three-dimensional global stratospheric chemistry transport model ROSE. The model contains an extensive photochemical scheme which includes heterogeneous chemistry and uses temperature and wind fields from the UKMO (United Kingdom Meteorological Office) stratospheric analysis. Ozone measurements obtained by the Microwave Limb...

Based on an empirical analysis of measurements with the High Resolution Doppler Imager (HRDI) on the UARS spacecraft in the upper mesosphere (95 km), persistent and regular intra-seasonal oscillations (ISO) with periods of about 2 to 4 months have recently been reported in the zonal-mean meridional winds. Similar oscillations have also been discussed independently in a modeling study, and they ...
